Hello! My name is Mary and I'd love to be your birth photographer or doula. I know that picking someone to be apart of such an intimate time can be difficult, but I hope this website make your choice a little easier.
My name is Mary Nieland and I am wife to a supportive husband and a mom to two little boys. After high school I pursued a degree in photography at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. My two years at MIAD taught me the skills that I now use to document birth through photography.I transferred to Mount Mary University where I got my bachelors in Art Therapy with summa cum laude distinction and as an honor student.
My additional two years at Mount Mary University taught me more than I could have imagined. I left college more accepting, flexible and compassionate, which directly translates to birth work.
Prior to becoming pregnant with my son I began to become more passionate about birth and the experience that surrounds it. During my pregnancy, I did research on what kind of labor and birth I wanted to have. With so much information out there it was daunting to figure out what was right for me.
After much consideration I decided on a home birth. I had incredibly supportive midwives throughout my pregnancy and birth. After my own experience I decided I wanted to help other women enjoy birth as much as I did. A few months after my own birth, I photographed my first birth. After Seeing another Doula in action, I was affirmed of my calling to support women throughout pregnancy, birth and postpartum by being a Doula.
I became a part of Light the Way Doula Services in January 2015 and worked along side Katie Stegeman for a year. After much consideration, Katie has decided to leave the birth field, thus making me the owner of Light the Way Doula Services. I look forward to serving women of the Fox Cities and beyond, and continuing the great work that Katie did for the birth community.
My goal is for woman to feel supported and empowered in their own birthing experience.
